Helpful tips when obtaining insurance

Get at least three different quotes before you decide on a company. Don't go solely by cost, you need to make sure you are comfortable with the company you decide to go with.

The following can affect your rates:

  • Completion of a Motorcycle safety training course
  • Years of Experience
  • Types of coverage
  • Having a "lay-up" policy (drops all coverage except comprehensive during winter months)
  • Your deductible amount - the higher the deductible the lower the rate
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Marital Status
  • Driving record
  • Other Insurance with same company
  • Home owner status
  • Membership to organizations (Some examples are: American Motorcycle Association, BMW Motorcycle Owners of America, Gold Wing Road Riders Association, Gold Wing Touring Association, Harley Owners Group, Motorcycle Safety Foundation) Keep in mind some of the organizations have a nominal fee which may also offer such things as roadside assistance and other similar benefits.
  • Insuring Multiple Bikes
  • Bike Type (Sport vs. Cruiser)
  • Claim history
  • Where you live
  • Where you store your bike
  • Number of miles your ride each year
  • Age of the bike
  • Security features on bike
  • Even your credit rating

Additional ways to protect your bike

Keep your bike stored out of view (garage) as much as possible
Add an audible security alarm
Check your bike frequently when parked in a public place
Don't carry your title with you, keep at home in a safe place
Make sure you have your insurance and registration with you

Please keep in mind: You may not be covered in every situation.
All policies have limits on what and how much they cover
